The Gospel According to John:
The Gospel According to John

We are working our way through the 'Gospel According to John' in our Sunday morning services.

Written somewhere between 85-90 AD by the apostle John (the son of Zebedee, the 'beloved' disciple) the book John has been described as 'a pool where a small child can safely wade and an elephant can easily swim'.  It is both clear and simple, as well as deep and complex at the same time.

The apostle John wrote this gospel account with a very clear purpose, as he says:

Why?  Most likely he was writing from Ephesus for the benefit of non-Chrisitans who were investigating Christianity, as well as for Chrisitans who were beginning to doubt the gospel message.  At that time a false teaching movement called 'Gnosticism' (the main idea in the novel The Da Vinci Code) was trying to explain away some of the foundational truths about Jesus.

John can be broken up into nine main sections that discuss what it means to 'believe in Jesus':
'Now Jesus did many other signs in the  presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.'     (20:30-31)
'Now Jesus did many other signs in the  presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.'     (20:30-31)
A Closer Look:

3.  The reactions of belief and unbelief • 5:1 - 6:71

4.  The crystallization of belief and unbelief • 7:1 - 11:53

5.  The crisis of belief and unbelief • 11:54 - 12:50

6.  The assurance for belief • 13:1 - 17:26

7.  The rejection by unbelief • 18:1 - 19:42

Heavenly Country

But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Just A Thought: When we struggle to make the right choice, it will help us to remember we are making them with eternity
in mind.  Earth is not our home.  Heaven is!
The LORD keeps all who love
Him,  But all the wicked He
will destroy.
Psalm 145:20
Mat 6:33  But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you.
Those destitute of the true doctrines of religion, and unacquainted with proper dependence on Divine Providence, make it their chief anxiety to seek food and clothing. But you, who have a knowledge of your Father in heaven; who know that He will provide for your needs, should not be anxious. Seek first His kingdom; seek first to be righteous, and to become interested in His favour, and all necessary things will be added to you. He has control over all things, and He can give you what you need. He will give you what he deems best for you.
